SHOWOFF Canopy Featured Artist: Charlene MarshFree Shipping on all orders above $1,300
We've had the pleasure of meeting quite a few oil painters in our Showoff Canopy travels, but not all are cut from the same dropcloth. Award-winning artist Charlene Marsh known throughout the midwest for landscapes depicting all seasons is definitely at the top of her game.
Charlene's also a member of the Indiana Plein Air Painters Association. En plein air means working your craft in an outdoor setting, utilizing natural light (as opposed to studio painting), and according to the wikipedia, the 19th century trend inspired groups like the Hudson River School and Impressionists such as Monet and Renoir. Another reason for its popularity was due to paint becoming portable for the first time (premixed in tubes). So the next time you're snapping selfies on your phone and instragramming and snapchatting, reveling in how you're all mobile, reflect on the pioneers who have come before.
Owner of the Charlene Marsh Studio and Gallery in Nashville, IN since 1987, Charlene hosts several open house weekends throughout the year. According to this article, Charlene will hike through any type of weather to create her art, preferring to use the rural area (Yellowwood State Forest) around her home as her muse. She wields a palette knife to layer oil paint on hardboard and says she works "entirely on location in one session". Charlene also maintains a blog where she doles out practical en plein air wisdom and lets us in on her creative process.
